Machine Guarding Inspection Checklist

Per 29 CFR 1910 Subpart O — Machinery & Machine Guarding | EHS Community Template

✓ = Satisfactory    ✗ = Deficiency Found (complete corrective action log)    N/A = Not Applicable
PART A — POINT OF OPERATION GUARDING (1910.212)
Inspection Item✓/✗/N/ACorrective Action Needed
1. All points of operation are guarded to prevent worker contact with moving parts
2. Guards are securely fastened and cannot be easily removed or bypassed
3. Guards do not create additional hazards (pinch points, entanglement)
4. Guards do not interfere with normal operation or visibility required for the task
5. Guard openings keep fingers and hands out of the danger zone (for mechanical power presses, see Table O-10 in 29 CFR 1910.217)
PART B — POWER TRANSMISSION APPARATUS (1910.219)
Inspection Item✓/✗/N/ACorrective Action Needed
6. All belts, pulleys, chains, and sprockets within 7 feet of floor/platform are guarded
7. Exposed horizontal shafting 7 feet or less from the floor or platform is enclosed; projecting shaft ends are smooth and capped if longer than half the shaft diameter
8. Gears are guarded at any height (complete enclosure, standard guard or band guard, 1910.219(f)(1)); clutches and couplings with projecting parts 7 feet or less from the floor are enclosed (1910.219(k)(1))
9. Guards on power transmission parts are in good condition, no damage or missing fasteners; power-transmission equipment is inspected at intervals of no more than 60 days (1910.219(p)(1))
PART C — INTERLOCKED & PRESENCE-SENSING GUARDS
Inspection Item✓/✗/N/ACorrective Action Needed
10. Interlocked guards stop machine immediately when guard is opened or removed
11. Machine cannot restart automatically when guard is replaced — requires deliberate restart
12. Light curtains / presence-sensing devices respond correctly (verified by test)
13. Two-hand control devices require simultaneous use of both hands to operate
14. Emergency stop (E-stop) devices are accessible, clearly labeled, functional, and tested
PART D — AUXILIARY & GENERAL MACHINE HAZARDS
Inspection Item✓/✗/N/ACorrective Action Needed
15. Feed mechanisms and auxiliary parts (rollers, conveyors) are guarded or safeguarded
16. Nip points on rollers, drums, or conveyors have adequate guarding
17. Ejected parts / projectiles are contained by guards, barriers, or deflectors
18. No evidence of guard bypass, defeat, or removal (zip ties cut, guards propped open)
19. LOTO procedures exist and are followed for all maintenance and servicing
20. Workers have been trained on machine guarding requirements and hazards
21. Machine guarding signage / warnings are legible and in place

Inspect power-transmission equipment at intervals not exceeding 60 days (1910.219(p)(1)); inspect and test each mechanical power press at least weekly for the clutch/brake mechanism, antirepeat feature and single-stroke mechanism, unless it meets 1910.217(b)(13) and (14) (1910.217(e)(1)). In Canada, machine guarding rules are set by your province or territory.
